Robbie Amell, left, and Stephen Amell in a scene from “Code 8. ” (Vertical Entertainment) Veteran TV actors (and real-life cousins) Robbie and Stephen Amell take a different approach to the superhero adventure in “Code 8, ” a dystopian science-fiction film set in a future where super-powered mutants are relatively common and yet treated as pariahs. Robbie Amell plays Conner, whose ability to manipulate electricity captures the attention of telekinetic crime boss Garrett (Stephen Amell). Directed by Jeff Chan from a script by Chris Pare, “Code 8” is more ambitious and adult than the Amells’ TV shows “Arrow” and “The Flash. ” It’s also a lot less fun. The ideas outpace the action in a movie that’s clearly been made with passion and intelligence, but without the kind of zip that this kind of story demands. Even a down-to-earth superhero picture occasionally needs to fly. “Code 8” Not rated Running time: 1 hour, 38 minutes Playing: Laemmle NoHo 7, North Hollywood; available Dec. 13 on VOD.

This is probably the best use of an Operating-budget that was ( based on ALL the information that I could find after a fairly exhaustive search - something in " the likely neighbourhood " of. USD 1.725 Million. that I've seen in a long, long time. Spearheaded by the actor-producer team of Real Life cousins Robbie Amell & Stephen Amell. TV's "Firestorm. The Green Arrow" respectively. helmed by the extraordinarily talented relative newcomer Jeff Chan, this picture grips you from the start. keeps you on the edge of your seat right the way thru ; not by way of Multi-million dollar special effects, but by getting you - d e e p l y - invested in the humanity of its Lead-protagonists. I must confess that I found the ending a tad bit abrupt. but reveling in the GENUINELY Flawed. thereby. Thoroughly. Believable ) nature of said characters. ( s o m e w h a t. in making up for that particular shortcoming.

The concept here is quite interesting - ordinary people have superpowers and are all still pretty much persecuted by the authorities. Amell is down on his luck and has a sick mother so, to pay for her extortionately expensive treatment, he seeks work casually - and soon falls in with the wrong company where he uses his powers (he can generate and focus electricity) to further their petty, but increasingly ambitious criminal activities. This gets him caught up between a drug-smuggling gang and with the pursuing police. Cousin Stephen discards his bow and arrow for this film, instead heading the druggie gang that will betray everyone/anyone as soon as look at them. The dialogue and pace of the film - there are some decent action scenes - keep it moving quite well, and the visual effects do their job - but the acting is just bland and the story an amalgam of B-grade X-men themes.

The film is a feature-length version of the 2016 short film of the same name. Plot [ edit] At the beginning of the 20th century, the public becomes aware of people with superhuman abilities known as Powers, causing the government to pass a law requiring all Powers to register their abilities. They quickly become a key component of the economy, notably when constructing Lincoln City as the "City of Tomorrow". As the Second Industrial Revolution begins, Powers are marginalized in the face of increasing mechanization, leading to severe prejudice as they become second-class citizens. By the 1990s, a crime syndicate known as The Trust has flooded the streets with an addictive drug called Psyke, made from the spinal fluid of desperate or trafficked Powers. Police departments begin using advanced drones, armed androids named Guardians and ever-present facial recognition software to combat Power-related crime while a city-wide Powers ban is debated. Connor Reed is a 26-year-old Class 5 Electric (electrokinetic). His mother, a Cryo (cryokinetic), has brain cancer which causes her abilities to sometimes act erratically. As Powers, they cannot afford the treatment she needs. Connor's father was also an Electric who died when he was young trying to rob a convenience store. As such, his mother has raised him never to use his abilities in front of normal people. Connor makes ends meet by working as an unregistered day laborer alongside many other Powers, using his abilities to install electrical wiring without protection. While on a job, the police arrive and order the workers to disband and a Pyro (pyrokinetic) is killed when attempting to flee arrest. Elsewhere in the city, a drug raid is conducted by detectives Park and Davis on an apartment complex owned by crime lord Marcus Sutcliffe, the local agent of The Trust and a Reader (telepath). Almost $1 million worth of product is seized, putting Sutcliffe in conflict with Wesley Cumbo, his superior in The Trust who demands their expected cut in a week's time. Reed is approached by Garrett, Sutcliffe's underling and a TK (telekinetic), and his crew for a job. Despite warnings from a fellow worker, Reed goes with them and participates in a chemical theft, shorting out the electric fence in an amazing show of power. Reed is introduced to Sutcliffe and meets Nia, Sutcliffe's supposed girlfriend. Park and Davis arrive on the scene the next day and determine that Sutcliffe is using the chemicals that were stolen to cut his remaining product, indicating he is desperate for revenue. Garrett recruits Reed, recognizing he has untapped potential, and agrees to help him earn enough money to get his mother treatment. He begins training Reed on how to use his abilities and uses him as an enforcer in the Psyke trade, while also grooming him to be more assertive, believing that normal people will always be afraid of Powers and they deserve to take what they want. Reed also grows close with the members of Garrett's crew, including Freddie, a mute Brawn (super strength), and Maddy, Garrett's girlfriend and a Pyro. Sutcliffe has the crew rob a bank in order to pay back The Trust, but the vault only contains $50, 000, since the vault was emptied for the weekend earlier that day. Cumbo's Shifter (shapeshifter) assassin Copperhead attempts to kill Sutcliffe for not honoring his debt, but Sutcliffe's bodyguard Rhino, a Brawn with bulletproof skin, manages to kill them. Reed is injured in the scuffle and Nia reveals that she is a Healer, and only remains with Sutcliffe to ease the effects of his Psyke addiction in order to pay a debt. Reed's mother confronts him about the stash of money he has been making working with the crew, chastising him for following in the footsteps of his father. She suddenly convulses and Reed rushes her to hospital, where the doctor tells him they will need to operate soon to remove her tumor. Park and Davis bring Reed in for questioning, encouraging him to cooperate as they have already confiscated much of the Psyke on the street, weakening Sutcliffe's influence. Davis advises they plant evidence in order to coerce Reed into informing, while Park is adamant that they cut him loose due to lack of evidence. Reed is released and goes to Garrett to suggest they raid the scheduled Psyke Run, the monthly transport of seized product for destruction, which will be worth approximately $10 million. Garrett and Reed bring the idea to Sutcliffe, where Reed demands Nia heal his mother as payment and Garrett stipulates he will be become a partner in running the Psyke trade. On the day of the heist, the crew blocks the truck while it is inside a no-fly-zone, preventing back-up by drones that carry Guardians. Reed shorts out the truck's electronics and they manage to destroy the Guardians. As Maddy hands off the Psyke to Rhino, Sutcliffe's men execute the officers protecting the truck and turn on the crew, killing Maddy and mortally wounding Freddie before he, Garrett and Reed manage to escape. Rhino flees with the drugs while the drone pilot disregards the no-fly-zone and drops additional Guardians into the area, killing the rest of Sutcliffe's men. Freddie dies as Reed and Garrett drive away. Reed tells Garrett that Sutcliffe betrayed them because of Garrett's demands, and they part ways. Davis and Park's captain is furious that Reed was not arrested before the heist, and demands they bring in those responsible. Park visits his daughter, a TK Power, who is afraid she will be given away because she is struggling to control her abilities. Reed contacts Park and offers up Sutcliffe's hideout. The cops raid Suttcliffe's hideout while Reed and Garrett seek revenge at his escape route. After killing Rhino and Sutcliffe, Garrett takes the Psyke for himself and encourages Reed to force Nia to heal his mother. Nia pleads with Reed to let her go, as her abilities do not just heal people, but force her to take the injury or disease onto herself, meaning she can die if she attempts to heal his mother. Reed takes Nia to the hospital at gunpoint, but finally tells her to stop after he sees how painful the process is for her. Reed shares a tearful goodbye with his mother before she dies. Reed drives to the police station and gives Nia his truck in order to leave the city. He decides to turn himself in to try and make up for his mistakes. Garrett hands over the Psyke to Cumbo and takes over the drug trade for The Trust in Lincoln City. Reed visits his mother's grave before he serves his sentence, while Nia has a tearful visit with her father in prison, whose debt she was paying off with Sutcliffe. Meanwhile, the Powers Ban is being voted on due to the heist while Park reluctantly accepts an award for the raid against Sutcliffe. Cast [ edit] Production [ edit] In 2016, Robbie and Stephen Amell released a short film, Code 8, which acted as a teaser for a potential feature film. Asking for $200, 000, an Indiegogo fundraising campaign was launched on March 23, reached $2. 4 million by April 24. [3] Fundraising closed with $3. 4 million on December 31, 2019, with the continued campaign helping recover costs of DVD pressings and the distribution to contributors of perks, wardrobe and props from the production. [3] The closing credits scroll of the film included four minutes to run through a list of just some of the 30, 810 contributors [3] to the fundraising campaign. The first announcement of additional cast came on June 12, 2017, when Laysla De Oliveira was cast in the film. [4] Principal photography began on June 1, 2017 in Toronto, Ontario. [5] Distribution [ edit] On February 9, 2017, during the Berlin International Film Festival, XYZ Films acquired the international sales rights for the film. [6] The film was released theatrically on December 13, 2019. The film was released on Netflix in the United States on April 11, 2020. [7] Reception [ edit] In April 2020 the film appeared on the top 10 Netflix list for the United States. No longer bound by real-time strategy limits, Renegade is a first person 3D shooter that puts you in control of a commando named Havoc in the forces of the GDI (sorry, no NOD gameplay for you evil gamers). Impressive graphics, decent playability, some depth, and story sequences featuring Havoc make playing for the good guys a righteous endeavor. Havoc is a quasi-renegade commando who decides to take the law into his own hands. From the outset when he attacks and kills NOD soldiers, the action never stops. Missions are long and difficult at times since each has several main and secondary objectives, often varying in complexity. For example, the first mission requires you to take out a Hand of NOD facility by placing C4 in the basement, but the next objective has you hacking into a database to unlock a gate to free prisoners of war and blow up a NOD communications building. Fortunately, you can save your progress during the long missions, which becomes a necessity. An impressive arsenal of weapons is yours for the taking during missions; you start with a pistol but quickly obtain the machine gun and sniper rifle. C4 explosives can be placed and remotely detonated to destroy missile turrets, ammunition for the rocket launcher comes in handy when destroying helicopters and tanks, and eventually you acquire items like the chain gun. Jumping into tanks and other vehicles like Humvees give you even more firepower, but due to their size, you can't maneuver them in certain areas. Although the missions vary a bit with always changing objectives and new weapons, your main objective is still simply blowing things up. It would have been nice if some levels had variations instead of always playing as a war-hungry, butt-kicking commando. Havoc isn't the type of guy to plant bugs or perform surveillance to catch the bad guys, nor will he stop to ask a NOD soldier a question. Renegade uses a typical combination keyboard-mouse setup for controls, and offers the feature of allowing weapon scrolling with the mouse wheel, making combat easier and more manageable with less memorization. The interface allows ease of movement and provides a large number of indicators for ammunition amounts and health. The latter isn't affected until you lose your armor, which can be replenished, but expect to die quickly without it. Usually these items are picked up from bodies of fallen NOD soldiers, but can also be found in towers and throughout the environment. Command & Conquer veterans will find Renegade gameplay totally different than previous series' titles. If you're a war strategy lover, but don't like action games like Doom or Half-Life, you may want to stay away from Renegade. However, the design provides a unique perspective on the fighting by changing your role from godlike controller to a soldier on the battlefield. Between levels, you're treated to interesting movie segments about Havoc, his general, and the trouble he gets into, but the entertainment is purely in Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone movie style. Havoc uses macho-man catch phrases that verge on the hilarity of "I'll be back" or "Hasta la vista, baby. " The storyline is weak, but the emphasis is on challenging action with little room for plot development. Graphics: Far away objects have as much detail as those close up. It's an all-encompassing 3D world with good colors and a variety of terrain features. Sound: Explosions are nicely done and resonate, especially with good speakers. NOD officers call for more troops, which allows you to find and kill them, and helicopter and tank noises alert you to their presence. Ambient sounds enhance gameplay. Enjoyment: Missions end with a movie where Havoc explains what to do next. The missions are fun, but extremely long and can nibble on your nerves and patience. A good arsenal and the ability to drive vehicles and utilize their weapons are great touches in preventing boredom. Replay Value: The replay factor found in RTS Command & Conquer games is sadly missing. The multiplayer aspect allows for some extended gameplay, assuming all participants have solid connections.
